Majors John and Johanna Pook

Two officers who grew up in the Salvation Army, one in England and the other in Latin America, share a love of God and service.  Majors John and Johanna “Jo” Pook focus their ministry on finding the hidden potential in people to facilitate transformation and growth.

John became a soldier at seventeen in his native England. In 1995, he traveled to the United States to work with Salvation Army summer camp programs. The following year he returned to camp and stayed when he was offered a job in Kenosha, WI. The next year God called him to service, and by 2000, he was commissioned as a Salvation Army officer.

Jo and John met as session mates at the College for Officer Training. They were both immigrants with accents, but also shared an enthusiasm for God’s work and service to others. Jo, who is from Panama, grew up in The Salvation Army as a child of officers. She received God’s call in 1996. Four years later she was commissioned and married John.

Today, the Majors serve the south side of Chicago, a diverse population of African-Americans and Hispanics. Majors Jo and John recognize that spiritual formation is a priority and offer church every day. They also offer basketball, swim team, archery, and line dancing, among others, to teach the children new skills and provide a safe place where Chicago’s south side youth can find their hidden potential.
